The Institute for Stem Cell Science and Regenerative Medicine (DBT-inStem, www.instem.res.in), an autonomous research institute of the Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India, invites online applications from enthusiastic candidates for admission to the Ph.D. program (the mid-term entry). DBT-inStem is a state-of-the-art research institute in Bangalore, India, dedicated to studying stem cells and regenerative biology with a translational emphasis. The institute is built on a core of collaborative research with a thematic focus. inStem’s mandate is to enable this cross-disciplinary, multi-pronged approach to research that straddles the divide between clinical and laboratory research.

1. Cardiovascular development and disease mechanisms
2. Chemical biology approaches for stem cells and therapeutics
3. Mechanisms regulating barrier tissue homeostasis
4. Modelling neurodevelopment and disease and
5. Metabolic regulation of cell fate.

We are looking for outstanding candidates, who will pursue their PhD research at inStem. Admitted students will have the opportunity to carry out cutting-edge, interdisciplinary research in the areas listed above. Students admitted to the inStem Ph.D. program are registered at the Regional Centre for Biotechnology (RCB), Faridabad, established by the Department of Biotechnology with the support of UNESCO, and recognized as an Institute of National Importance.
Eligibility:
All applicants must satisfy the following minimal eligibility criteria in order to apply for this program.

Candidate must have a Master’s degree from a recognized institution in any area of science and technology, or a Bachelor of Medicine or Technology or an equivalent degree from a recognized University or institution. The minimum qualifying marks will be at least 55% in their highest University examination.

Candidates must have qualified for a currently valid (as of 02 January 2024) Research Fellowship from one or more of the following agencies: DBT/ CSIR / UGC / ICMR / DST INSPIRE only. This fellowship must be activated if an admitted student accepts and joins the Ph.D. program. Other qualifications will not be considered.

Over six months of laboratory research experience is desirable.

Eligible candidates who meet the screening committee’s shortlisting criteria will be interviewed for selection in Nov 2022 (dates to be announced).
Reservations: Reservation policy will be followed as per Government of India norms. SC/ ST/ OBC candidates are required to submit certificates in respect of their claims from authorized officers as notified by the Government for the purpose from time to time. The differently-abled (with a minimum 40% disability) candidates are required to submit a certificate from authorized Medical Doctors/ Hospitals indicating the extent of physical disability.

Exemption from Payment of Application Fee: As per the prevailing guidelines of the Government of India, (i) SC/ST community (ii) Women and PwD category of any community are exempted from Application Fees. Supporting certificates should be uploaded for SC/ST & PwD candidates.
Payment of Application Fee: The application fee is to be paid online using a Credit Card/Debit Card/Net Banking/UPI. Application Fees paid by the candidates who have not submitted their application, or whose application is not shortlisted will not be refunded. All applicable service charges, bank charges, etc. shall be borne by the applicants. The confirmed payment of application fees is required for a completed application.

How to Apply: To apply for the program, interested candidates may log in to the DBT-inStem website - https://www.instem.res.in and use the advertised link at https://www.instem.res.in/jobportal/instem-midterm-2023-phd-program to apply and upload all documents including degree certificates, NET qualifications, research write-up, publications (if any). All applications are online only. Candidates need to upload their eligibility documents, and also complete and submit a brief, 2-page original research idea in a relevant area of their interest, which will be evaluated as part of the screening criteria.

PhD interviews will be in Nov 2023 (date to be announced), in a combination of online and in-person modules.
Note: The date and time of the interviews will be forwarded to the registered e-mail ids of only those candidates shortlisted for interviews, and no TA/DA will be paid for attending the interviews.

General Terms and Conditions:
Only those candidates selected through interviews will receive an offer letter for admission to the Ph.D. program at DBT-inStem. Incomplete or ineligible applications will be rejected, and no correspondence shall be entertained in this regard. The institute is not responsible for consequences arising out of furnishing incorrect or incomplete details in the application. If any information given in the application is incorrect/false, the application and candidature may be considered terminated. The candidature may be cancelled at any time if the candidate is not eligible as per norms.
A relaxation in marks/grade during Master’s Degree for those belonging to SC/ ST/ OBC (non-creamy layer) / differently-abled or any other category will be applicable as per the UGC notification 2016 or any subsequent notification in force at the time of interview.
Candidates must fill in their correct and active e-mail addresses in the online application, as all correspondence will be made by the institute through e-mail only. The final selection is made based on performance in the interviews.
