Fundamental research and innovation: the link between fundamental science and economic development by Didier Roux [Collège de France : Chaire d'innovation Technologique Liliane Betancourt (2016-2017) and Académie des Sciences, France]

This talk will examine the link between fundamental research, inventions and innovations. For this we will discuss the history of Innovations in digital that will take us from Pascal's calculating machine to the modern era of digital: that's the great story.

It will also be illustrated by the personal experience of the author in his life as a researcher in statistical physics of complex fluids: that's the little story. From these examples, we will draw conclusions about the richness and synergies between understanding fundamental science and economic development.
