Sir Leszek Borysiewicz, Vice-chancellor of Cambridge University visited the NCBS and inStem campus on the 16th of September. Sir Leszek, accompanied by a senior Cambridge delegation also took time to interact with researchers on the campus. The visit served to reinforce several existing links between the campus and the University of Cambridge, and to commemorate Sir Leszek’s instrumental role in fostering links between the institutions during his Vice-chancellorship.
A prominent collaboration between the two institutions, the Center for Chemical Biology and Therapeutics (CCBT), at inStem and NCBS, focussing on furthering understanding of diseases such as cancer by combining methods from across genetics, chemistry, cell biology and biochemistry, was inaugurated in 2013 by Sir Leszek. The Centre is led by Prof Ashok Venkitaraman, the Ursula Zoellner Professor of Cancer Research at the University of Cambridge, the Director of the Medical Research Council (MRC) Cancer Cell Unit at the Hutchison/MRC Research Centre and also a Collaborative Science Chair at inStem. The Centre is generously supported via a major grant from the Department of Biotechnology and also benefits from a joint award made by the UK Medical Research Council and the DBT. Sir Leszek and the delegates met with researchers from the team at the CCBT laboratories.

The Centre exemplifies the tremendous potential for collaborative research between Cambridge and India, and we are greatly indebted to Sir Leszek for his unstinting efforts to promote Cambridge-India links.” said Prof. Venkitaraman.
The joint Postdoctoral Fellowships Programme, supports postdocs across labs at Cambridge and NCBS-inStem were also discussed during the visit. Six postdocs are currently selected to this prestigious programme.

The work being carried out here is essential to the development of new, more effective therapeutic treatments to combat cancer. This work cannot be done by a single institution. I am incredibly pleased that Cambridge and inStem are partners in this important project.”
