inStem Ph.D. Program

What We Offer

The inStem Ph.D. program is designed to provide rigorous training in the fundamentals and translational applications of stem cell science. This program equips students with the skills and knowledge to make internationally recognized discoveries and prepares them for competitive positions in the field worldwide.

At the core of inStem’s research ecosystem is its dynamic Ph.D. program. inStem’s unique theme-based organization fosters collaborative training and mentorship, allowing students to work with leading scientists across diverse research themes and gain valuable interdisciplinary experience.

Eligibility & Admission Process

The inStem Ph.D. program is highly competitive, with a rigorous selection process:

  • Candidates typically have a Master’s degree in any basic science discipline to be eligible for admission.
  • Additionally, candidates must have qualified for national-level entrance exams (including CSIR NET, UGC, DBT-BET, INSPIRE, ICMR).
  • Upon fulfilling these criteria, candidates must submit an application package for the next stage of the selection process. Shortlisting for interviews is based on the application package.
  • Selected candidates will be registered at the Regional Centre for Biotechnology (RCB), an Institute of National Importance established by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India, in partnership with UNESCO.
  • Registration at RCB is contingent on successfully completing coursework and a comprehensive examination, which assesses fundamental biological concepts and the ability to frame research questions and methodologies.

How to Apply

Prospective Ph.D. students can join inStem through the following pathways:

  • i3C-BRIC Program in Biosciences (Link)
  • Direct admission to the inStem Ph.D. program (with Fall [August] and Spring [January] intakes each year)

Facilities & Resources at inStem

inStem provides its students access to state-of-the-art technologies and world-class research facilities (Link), including:

  • Stem Cell Core
  • Animal Care and Resource Center
  • Central Imaging and Flow Cytometry Facility
  • Mass Spectrometry Facility
  • Next-Generation Sequencing Facility
  • Cryo-Electron Microscopy Facility

Students also benefit from on-campus housing, an in-house canteen with subsidized pricing, and access to a vibrant academic environment (Campus Life & Well-being).

Additionally, students have the opportunity to participate in seminars, conferences, and hands-on workshops in various fields of biology. They can engage with eminent researchers from institutions in India and abroad and are encouraged to present their research at national and international meetings, with institutional support for travel.

Interdisciplinary & Collaborative Research Environment

Scientific programs at inStem are highly multidisciplinary, spanning research from single molecules to complex model systems, with a major focus on stem cell biology. Students are encouraged to collaborate with other research groups on campus, enabling them to learn new techniques and develop innovative research ideas.

inStem is committed to providing cutting-edge resources, mentorship, and an intellectually stimulating environment to support students in their pursuit of scientific excellence.
